The Early Shift: Neon Pigeon's Happy Hour Is the Best Way to End Your Workday in the CBD

The best happy hour in Singapore's CBD isn't the one with the cheapest beer. It's the one that actually feels like the workday is over.

Neon Pigeon needs little introduction. The restaurant-bar at 36 Carpenter Street has been one of Singapore's most recognised dining and drinking destinations — a 50 Best Discovery venue that built its reputation on sharp Japanese-inspired food, a serious bar programme, and an energy that most venues spend years trying to manufacture. The Early Shift is their happy hour, and it's one of the most well-considered in the CBD.

When and where

The Early Shift runs Sunday to Thursday, 5.30PM to 6.30PM (excluding public holidays) at Neon Pigeon, 36 Carpenter Street. One hour. Right in the heart of the CBD. Close enough to Tanjong Pagar and Raffles Place that the commute from your desk is genuinely manageable — and a far better use of that first hour of freedom than a packed MRT carriage.

What's on

The drinks are direct and well-priced. Cocktails come in at $15 each — the Momochu Sling layers Glenfiddich 12 with iichiko saiten shochu, peach wine, Thai basil, ginger ale, and malic acid for something sessionable and interesting. The Deez Nutz goes richer with Absolut Vodka, Frangelico, cacao, nutella, and cream. Not drinking?

The zero-proof Ginger Rice Fizz — non-alcoholic rum, mirin, red rice apple vinegar, ginger ale — means you're not stuck with a sparkling water.

Highballs are $12 each across a considered lineup: Nikka Days Whiskey, Hendrick's Gin, Milagro Tequila, Nikka Coffey Vodka, and Bacardi Rum. Asahi Super Dry rounds it out at $12 for a 300ml pour.

The food menu is tight and built for drinking. Okonomiyaki Fries ($12) come loaded with okonomiyaki sauce, katsuobushi, kewpie, nori, and pickled ginger. Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice ($12) pairs crispy sushi rice with spicy tuna tartare and soy sauce.

Takoyaki ($12 for 5 pieces) does the classics right — octopus, katsu sauce, kewpie, furikake. And the Taco of the Day at $8 a piece is the lowest-commitment, highest-reward entry point on the menu.

Why this is the CBD happy hour worth showing up for

Carpenter Street puts you in genuinely good company. But beyond location, what separates The Early Shift from a generic two-for-one promotion is that Neon Pigeon doesn't change register for it. The same bar team, the same kitchen, the same room that draws the dinner crowd — just an hour earlier and at a price point that makes it easy to commit to a Tuesday. That's rare. Most CBD happy hours feel like a venue trying to fill dead hours. This one feels like the actual point of the evening.

One hour. Go early. Stay for dinner.
